Your Home Maintenance Checklist for October

In recognition of National Kitchen and Bath Month—celebrated this month, our October checklist provides helpful maintenance tips for those two rooms—both of which are often considered the most important in a home.

Get your kitchen ready for holiday cooking and entertaining.

Refrigerator

Use a vacuum or a bendable coil cleaning brush to remove dust, pet hair and cobwebs that catch in the coils located under and behind your refrigerator. Clogged coils can cause the compressor to work harder and longer, using more energy and shortening the life of your refrigerator.

Exhaust fan

Remove the exhaust fan filters from above your range and put them in the dishwasher to clean all the grease that have collected in them from cooking.

Dishwasher

Reduce lime scale build-up and bacteria by removing the racks and utensil basket, then pour white vinegar in the bottom of the empty machine. Close the door and run the dishwasher on the hottest water possible to disinfect the inside. Use a dampened cloth with a mixture of vinegar and water to wipe the outside.

Stone countertops

Avoid harsh chemicals and acidic solutions like lemon juice or vinegar as they can etch and discolor the stone over time. Instead, use mild cleaning solutions and non-abrasive cloths.

Maintain your bathroom with these quick and easy tips.

Faucet aerators

Twist off faucet aerators and rinse to remove mineral deposits.

Caulk

Prevent moisture from getting inside the walls, where it can cause mold and mildew, by removing old caulk and resealing seams with a mold-resistant bathroom caulk.

Sink

Look under the sink for leaks and moisture caused by corroded pipes or cracks in the connections. Replace promptly to avoid water damage and mold.

Tiles

Check for loose or shifting tiles and apply grout to hold them in place and avoid water damage to your walls and floor.

Drains. Use drain covers in your tub and shower to block hair, dirt and other particles that can clog drains.
