Love Our Library

I have never been a bookworm but I have always admired them - their imagination, focus and creativity. Having a daughter has given me a new opportunity to be a bookworm and now I can learn to enjoy them through reading with her.

Loudoun County has an amazing public library system (LCPL). We are fortunate enough to live close to several locations and frequently attend Story Time or other events at the nearby locations. Our personal favorites are the Story Times hosted at Cascades Library - the staff are super friendly and talented musically. (Click here to view a list of Loudoun County Library storytimes and events).

Recently I was told about LCPL Foundations 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten and I signed us up right away - why not keep track of what we have read and aim to achieve this goal. Given that Julianna is just 17 months old this is much more a challenge for Casey and I to take on - so of course we had to make it slightly harder - by taking it to the next level with 1,000 Different Books Before Kindergarten.

The intention being why not read different books and keep a running list with our rankings and notes on our personal favorites. That way we can always have a running list of books we would love to own or future gift ideas. We dove into this process on January 30th and on March 8th turned in our first 100 books. Below is a list of our top 10 favorite books so far (in no particular order):

Good Night I Love You by Caroline Church

Time for A Hug by Mim Green & Phillis Gershator

Frog and Toad Storybook Treasury by Arnold Lobel

The Biggest Kiss by Joann Walsh & Judi Abbot

Wherever you go my love will find you by Nancy Tillman

What Makes a Rainbow by Betty Schwartz

A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni

Raindrop, Plop! By Wendy Cheyette Lewison & Illustrated by Pam Paparone

Henry's Night by D.B. Johnson

Henry Builds a Cabin by D.B. Johnson

I know it may seem kind of silly but I am super proud that in just 37 days we knocked out the first 100. Who knows maybe we will do 2,000 books before kindergarten - but for now let’s stick with 1,000 different books. Let me know your recommendations on your favorite children book.
